In our new report, “Boys & Men in Greater Boston: Challenges in Education, Employment and Health,” which we co-wrote with the American Institute for Boys and Men, we look at data that shows the need for change. In fact, a close look at the data reveals that men further down the socioeconomic ladder, particularly Black, Latino, non-college-educated, and lower-income men, are falling behind academically and economically.

💡 “The most valuable currency in the world isn’t money—it’s trust.”
You can have all the funding, all the strategy, all the resources—but without trust, none of it moves the needle. That’s why true philanthropy isn’t just about giving money; it’s about giving trust. Trusting that the right people, when empowered, will create real change.
Too often, we measure impact in dollars raised. But what if we measured it in relationships built, dignity preserved, and barriers removed?
💬 What’s one act of trust that changed your life?

A question I’m often asked is: “If the way we are is not our fault, then where is our responsibility for our actions, our behaviors, and our power to create change?” In this video, I explore how the impact of childhood trauma isn’t something we chose—but how we respond to it in adulthood is entirely up to us.

The New Happy

They have it worse than you — so your pain doesn’t matter. You have it worse than them — so how dare they complain?
There is absolutely nothing to be gained from this; it’s a habit that only leads to more pain, that only creates a vicious cycle of more suffering.
We do this because we yearn for our own pain to be acknowledged and validated. To know that someone sees how hard we’ve tried, how much we’ve lost, how broken our hearts are. And in our deepest yearning to be seen, we isolate ourselves from the very people who could give us what we want most. It’s a tragedy.
We all need to learn both how to acknowledge our own pain and how to acknowledge others’ pain. That’s what will help everyone to heal and move forward. You can start right now. For yourself: pause and put your hand on your heart. Ask, “Where am I in pain, and what love do I need?” For others: pause and think about someone in your life. Ask, “How might they be in pain, and how could I support them?”

Mental Health America
January 17, 2025
Nonprofit | Research
Mental Health America’s latest report, Breaking the Algorithm: Redesigning social media for youth well-being, dives deep into how social media is impacting young people’s mental health, relationships, and daily lives.
Born from the Breaking the Algorithm summit and research project, this initiative was led and co-created by young people every step of the way. From designing the research questions to conducting surveys and focus groups, to analyzing and synthesizing our final findings, youth voices were at the center of this work.
- This report brings together insights from over 900 survey respondents, focus groups with young people, and conversations with our youth co-researchers to explore:
The dual nature of social media as both a connector and a source of harm. - How algorithms shape youth experiences, often without their full understanding or consent.
- Why it’s critical to empower young people with tools, education, and a voice in the systems that shape their digital worlds.

American Institute for Boys and Men

But long-term data reveal a clear and alarming trend: In recent decades, American men have been faring increasingly worse in many areas of life, including education, workforce participation, skill acquisition, wages, and fatherhood.
Gender politics is often framed as a zero-sum game: Any effort to help men takes away from women. But in his 2022 book Of Boys and Men, journalist and Brookings Institution scholar Richard V. Reeves argues that the structural problems contributing to male malaise affect everybody, and that shying away from these tough conversations is not a productive path forward.

This episode uncovers the hidden roles we carry in relationships—roles that often date back to our earliest experiences and shape how we connect with others. From being the “caretaker” to the “perfectionist,” these familiar patterns tend to influence our choices and interactions long after childhood, even if that role no longer serves us.
With tools grounded in neuroscience and practical guidance, this conversation dives into what it takes to rewrite those outdated scripts. Listeners will learn simple steps to heal the past, break free from conditioned reactions, and start building relationships that align with who they truly are. It’s absolutely possible to embody a new role and make room for the connections that genuinely feel right.

Why We Provide Mindfulness Training to Schools
Educating the next generation is a great responsibility; a role with the potential to provide exceptional fulfillment. However, due to the current state of many school systems and the lack of resources to adequately navigate life challenges, that potential is often replaced by less than favorable outcomes. While many external factors can be out of our control, we can help prevent and spot symptoms of trauma related to ACES, Adverse Childhood Experiences by teaching mindfulness in schools. Our trauma sensitive programming and approach, creates strong internal resources for well-being, stress-reduction, and resilience that transforms the classroom experience for both teachers and students.
